Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare an output device for outputting images. Devices may include, but are not limited to, plate setters, image setters and commercial digital printers.
It applies to individuals in the printing and graphic art industry.
Typically these individuals design and prepare layouts and artwork, and manipulate images and texts to meet production requirements. They generally work under direct supervision.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Elements and Performance Criteria
ELEMENT | PERFORMANCE CRITERIA |
Elements describe the essential outcomes. | Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. |
1 Prepare output device | 1.1 Output 1.2 All required proofs and checks are completed prior to outputting images |
2 Output image | 2.1 System is activated to initiate output according to job specifications 2.2 Print queues are managed to ensure efficient production 2.3 Image output is evaluated to ensure it conforms to job specifications 2.4 Image is prepared for next stage of production process according to job specifications |
Evidence of Performance
Evidence of the ability to:
calibrate and use at least TWO devices to output electronic images to film, paper or plate, according to listed performance criteria
find and use information relevant to the task from a variety of information sources
provide proofed, error-free final output to digital printer/plotter that conforms to the job specifications
identify substrate for reproduction
demonstrate a clear understanding of printing processes.
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.
Evidence of Knowledge
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:
describe types of output devices used in pre-press
outline considerations that determine application of these devices
explain function of calibration software
describe procedure for downloading a file to output device
outline main considerations to ensure accurate transfer of files
describe correct handling and material loading of the output device
explain how to identify a correctly processed image
list factors that control image quality through a processor
list criteria for identifying a correctly transferred file
detail requirement of image to meet job specifications
outline criteria to ensure final image meets job specifications
list criteria for evaluating a final film
list manuals, safety and other documentation relevant to this task and identify where they are kept and what information is included.
Assessment Conditions
Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the Pre-Press field of work and include access to special purpose tools, equipment and industry software packages.
Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.
Foundation Skills
This section describes language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills incorporated in the performance criteria that are required for competent performance.
Skill | Performance Criteria | Description |
Reading | 1.1, 2.1, 2.3, 2.4 | Recognises and interprets text to establish job requirements from information contained within relevant procedures and specifications |
Get the work done | 1.1, 1.2, 2.1-2.4 | Determines priorities and sequences steps involved in clearly defined, familiar tasks and identifies and assembles resources required Applies analytical processes to resolve technical problems Initiates standard procedures when responding to familiar problems within immediate context Understands purposes, specific functions and key features of common digital systems and tools and operates them effectively to create and save files in required format |
